For over 46 years, the Royal Commonwealth Society Ottawa Branch has organized the week long National Student Commonwealth Forum. This youth led forum engages young leaders of tomorrow, (approximately 100 Canadian high school and post secondary students), in discussing resolutions for current global topics.  The theme for 2019 is “Sustainable Communities”.

To make this leadership program accessible, the RCS Ottawa Branch underwrites the delegate travel costs to and from Ottawa, and recruits local families to billet out of town delegates.

We would like to invite you to host one (1) or more students from outside the Ottawa/Gatineau region for the duration of the 2019 Forum, April 27th – May 4rd 2019.

Requirements of billetors:

-Provide lodging for delegates between arrival day April 27th and departure day May 4th 2019
-Provide a bed or air mattress for each student

-For delegate safety, hosts undergo a police records check for the vulnerable sector (free of charge)

Optional aspects of billeting:

NSCF delegates are given a local bus pass for the week, but to help your billets get oriented we recommend:
-Transportation of billet to/from the airport/train station
-Providing breakfast every morning

-For late evening events, either picking up billets from the downtown Ottawa venue or the closest bus stop, so that they don’t have to walk an unfamiliar neighbourhood at night

Benefits for billetors:

Meet, learn, and engage with high school students that come from as far as away as St. John’s, to Victoria, to Iqaluit and everywhere in between!
Participate in many NSCF events such as:
  • Attend the Commonwealth Cultural Evening - Sunday
  • Watch the delegates debate contemporary Canadian issues in the Senate Chamber - Monday
  • Observe the model Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting at Global Affairs Canada - Thursday
  • Attend the NSCF final dinner with all the delegates and guests - Friday

The continuing support of families such as yourselves is crucial for the ongoing success of our Forum. You, the billeting families, make it possible for us to keep our registration fees at an affordable level for all of our delegates. More importantly, you provide our delegates with something beyond price: a warm and welcoming home-away-from-home.

Billeted delegates

Are required to sign a “code of conduct” to respect, among other things, the billetor house rules and schedule.

Testimonials from Delegates

“Billeting was an awesome experience and I wish it was more popular to do in current day. I had never billeted before and was wary of what it would be like but it ended up just adding to the week's experience. Thank you so much for organizing this Forum, loved everything about the week!”
–Danielle K. (Hamilton, ON)

“As an In-Town delegate, it was awesome to show my city to all the friends I made at NSCF. I had the luxury of attending the Forum but still being able to go home like normal. My favourite part of the Forum was spending time in the Senate. At first I thought I had done everything possible in Ottawa, but NSCF proved me wrong and showed me an amazing time! I am going to miss everyone I met this week so much!”
